Regional Development Ministry Celebrates 24 Retirees

The Ministry of Regional Development has urged its 24 retirees to see retirement as the beginning of a new phase of life, rather than the end of their contributions to society.

The Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr Mary Ogbe, gave the charge on Wednesday at a retirement ceremony held to honour officers who bowed out of service after years of contribution to national development.

Ogbe said the ministry valued the retirees’ years of dedication, commitment and sacrifice, urging them to continue to deploy their knowledge and experience for the benefit of society.

“We celebrate you, and we are grateful for your commitment, dedication, and service to the nation,” she said.

She also drew their attention to government welfare packages and severance benefits available to retirees, noting that the provisions would help provide financial stability during the transition to pension.

The Director of Human Resources Management, Mrs Tabitha Dagyol, said the retirees had played important roles in sustaining the ministry through its various stages of development.

She said some of the retirees spent more than three decades in public service, implementing policies, mentoring younger officers and keeping the system running during difficult periods.

Dagyol said the officers had contributed to the transformation of the organisation from its formative stage as the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs to its current expanded mandate as the Ministry of Regional Development.

“Each one of you carried a brick in building this Ministry from its formative stage as the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs to its present expanded mandate as the Ministry of Regional Development. Your footprints are indelible,” she said.

She described retirement as a transition to a period of rest, family, community service and personal pursuits, while urging serving workers to learn from the retirees’ dedication.

Speaking for the retirees, former Director of Finance and Accounts, Akpan Etop Andy, expressed appreciation to the ministry for the recognition.

He advised serving officers to treat their colleagues with kindness and support, saying positive relationships built during active service would determine how people are remembered after retirement.
