EPL: Man United post £43m loss despite record £678m revenue

Manchester United have recorded a £43 million annual loss despite generating a club-record £677.6 million in revenue for the year ended June 30, 2026.

The latest figures represent the club’s seventh consecutive annual loss, with the deficit increasing by almost one-third despite a 1.7 per cent rise in revenue.

The increase in revenue was largely driven by broadcasting income, which rose by almost 20 per cent after United finished third in the Premier League, a significant improvement on their 15th-place finish the previous season.

However, commercial and matchday revenues both fell by close to five per cent during a campaign in which United had no European fixtures.

The accounts also showed that the club incurred £8.2 million in exceptional costs, mainly linked to the departure of former manager Ruben Amorim, who left in January after 14 months in charge.

United also spent £63.5 million acquiring land around Old Trafford as part of plans for a new 100,000-capacity stadium. The spending came amid wide-ranging cost-cutting measures overseen by co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, including significant job cuts.

The 2025/26 season ended with Michael Carrick replacing Amorim and guiding United to Champions League qualification. Despite that improved league finish, the club’s financial position remained under pressure from operating costs and higher loan repayments.

United chief executive Omar Berrada said the results reflected the impact of the club’s restructuring programme and its commercial strength.

“This shows the direct impact of the work we have been doing over the past two years,” Berrada said.

“It also proves Manchester United’s enduring popularity and commercial strength.”

“While these results confirm that we are on the right trajectory, we will continue to take a disciplined approach to ensure our finances remain sustainable,” he added.

United are forecasting revenue of between £740 million and £760 million for the current financial year, as their return to the Champions League is expected to boost broadcasting and commercial income.
