Saving Professional Development Video for CPD

Nurses, teachers, accountants, engineers and many other professions require ongoing development, and a growing share of the available material is video.

Save around your actual gaps

Not everything relevant. The material for the specific thing you are working on this quarter.

Check whether it counts

This is the part people get wrong. Watching a video is not automatically recordable CPD.

Most professional bodies require the activity to be relevant, reflected upon, and recorded in a particular way. Some require accredited providers specifically and will not accept general material.

Read your body’s requirements before building a routine around content that will not count.

Keep a reflection alongside each file

Almost every CPD framework asks not what you watched but what you took from it and what you changed.

Two or three lines in a text file beside the video, written the same day. That is what the record needs, and reconstructing it at renewal is much harder.

Note the source properly

Who produced it, their credentials, the date, and the link. For anything you log, you will need to identify it later.

Date matters particularly in clinical and technical fields, where guidance changes and old material can be actively wrong.

Prefer accredited and institutional sources

Anyone can post a confident explanation. In regulated fields, the source matters more than the production quality.

Professional bodies, recognised institutions and named practitioners with verifiable credentials are worth more than a well-edited clip from an unidentified account.

Cross-check anything clinical or technical

Practice guidance differs between countries and changes over time. Material produced elsewhere may describe an approach not used or not approved here.

Check against your own regulator’s current guidance rather than assuming it transfers.

Build it into the week

Fifteen minutes of audio on the commute, three times a week, is more CPD than most people manage in occasional evenings.

Load the week’s listening on a Sunday and it happens without further decisions.

Keep the record longer than the cycle

Audits happen after the fact. Keep your log and your notes for at least the length of your renewal cycle, and preferably longer.

What video does not replace

Supervised practice, assessment, and anything requiring demonstration of competence. Video supports those and does not substitute for them.

Log it the same day

CPD records reconstructed at renewal are thin and inaccurate. Ten minutes the same day produces something that actually reflects what you learned.

Keep the log in one place rather than across notebooks, apps and email.

Keep evidence of completion

Where a provider issues a certificate or a record of completion, save that alongside your notes.

Some bodies accept reflection alone and some require proof. Keeping both means you are covered either way.
