The Counsellor’s Curse: When You Know Too Much to Fall in Love

In Kenya, people do not only hire relationship counsellors. They audit them. A ring on the finger becomes a licence. A quiet Instagram becomes proof of failure. That public exam is one reason so many of them look single, separated, or permanently “focusing on themselves.”

The work trains a mind that cannot switch off. After years of hearing how affairs start, how respect dies, and how families take sides, romance stops feeling mysterious. It starts looking like a file. A late reply is not chemistry. It is a red flag. A joke about “my ex” is not banter. It is data. You cannot flirt easily when your brain is already writing the case notes.

There is also a substitution problem. Clients bring intensity: tears, secrets, gratitude. That can feel like intimacy without the risk of being chosen poorly. Some counsellors pour their best listening into paying strangers and arrive home with nothing left. The partner gets the leftover version: tired, analytical, slightly superior.

Kenya’s gender script makes it worse. A woman who teaches boundaries is told she is unmarriageable. A man who talks feelings is told he is soft. The same society that books the session later asks, “If you are so wise, why are you alone?” That question is not curiosity. It is punishment.

Many stay single on purpose. After mapping the same cycle a hundred times — provision without presence, beauty without character, church on Sunday and chaos on Wednesday — they raise the bar so high that almost nobody clears it. That is not always arrogance. Sometimes it is self-defence.

So the unstable counsellor is not always a hypocrite. Sometimes they are a person who has seen the engine of Kenyan relationships with the hood open. Once you have watched the machinery, it is harder to believe the advert.
